Interim Chair announced for NHS Cheshire and Merseyside
Tuesday, 21 October 2025

NHS England has confirmed the appointment of Sir David Henshaw as the new Interim Chair of NHS Cheshire and Merseyside for a period of up to 18 months.
Previously Joint Chair for Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Wirral Community Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust, Sir David was also Chair of Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust between February 2011 and February 2019.
Earlier in his career, Sir David was Chair of the North West Strategic Health Authority and Chief Executive of Liverpool City Council. He was also responsible for the review of the child support system in the UK in 2007 and was involved in the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit Capability Review of central government departments.
Sir David takes over from Raj Jain, who served as Chair of NHS Cheshire and Merseyside from July 2022.
Raj previously described the launch of the 10-Year Health Plan as a natural and timely point for transition.
He said: “We are already seeing progress across Cheshire and Merseyside to improve health outcomes and reduce health inequalities for the communities we serve.
“I wish Sir David the very best as he leads NHS Cheshire and Merseyside into the next phase of transformation.”
