Dr Ruth Hussey CB, OBE, DL

Ruth is a licensed public health doctor who has worked in academia, the NHS and civil service with over 25 years of experience working as an executive director and 7 years as a non-executive director.

After graduating from the University of Liverpool, Ruth’s medical career was established in Liverpool where she was Director of Public Health for over 10 years. Posts at Cheshire and Merseyside strategic health authority, North West regional level and at the Dept of Health followed before becoming Chief Medical Officer for Wales, a post from which she retired in 2016. She has been committed to reducing health inequalities in all her roles and has served on numerous national policy and advisory boards. She chaired a parliamentary review of Health and Social Care in Wales and was a commissioner on the Lancet review on the Future of the NHS.

After completing seven years with the Food Standards Agency as a non-executive, Ruth is currently, Deputy Chair of The Health Foundation and a trustee of The Reader charity. She chairs the NIHR School for Public Health Research Advisory Board and the Care Inspectorate Wales Advisory Board. Ruth is also a commissioner on the review into the use of law in public health emergencies. Ruth has academic awards from several universities in England and Wales.

Ruth lives in south Liverpool, enjoys keeping fit, cooking produce from her allotment and is currently serving as High Sheriff for Merseyside until April 2024.
