Update: Eastham Walk in Centre - 22nd November 2017

Message from Simon Banks, Chief Officer – NHS Wirral CCG

I wanted to write to you to provide you with a further update on the Eastham Walk in Centre and our proposed Urgent Care Consultation.

Eastham Walk in Centre

My email of the 9th November 2017 reaffirmed our intention to end the temporary suspension of the Eastham Walk in Centre service and following a decision made at the CCG Governing Body a formal request was sent to Wirral Community NHS Foundation Trust (WCT) to ask them to submit a plan to the CCG for the resumption of the service.

The CCG is pleased that WCT has responded positively and has received proposals from WCT. We are working in partnership to ensure that WCT can deliver a service in accordance with its contractual obligations whilst recognising that the clinical streaming process introduced at Arrowe Park Hospital, which is a requirement of NHS England, must remain in place to support the delivery of safe and effective care at the Emergency Department. One of the principal issues for consideration is the limited availability of Advanced Nurse Practitioners across the local health system as the ANPs from Eastham WIC were transferred to Arrowe Park Hospital to support clinical streaming.  This issue is factored into the proposals received from WCT and we have recognised that it can take a considerable amount of time to train new ANPs and the availability of these nurses through agencies is equally challenging. With this in mind we are considering a solution that will result in the reopening of the Eastham Walk in Centre whilst recognising the issues faced by a limited clinical workforce.

Urgent Care Consultation

It was our intention to commence a public consultation on Urgent Care Services in Wirral from 27th November 2017. However, we have decided to postpone the commencement of the consultation.

This is to allow us to consider additional feedback from stakeholders in relation to our proposed options. We will be in a position to confirm a revised start date in due course.
