Do you have a happy heart?

Estimates suggest that nearly 40,000 people in Wirral have high blood pressure and don’t know about it.

As part of national Know Your Numbers (KYN) Week, 9-15 September 2019, Wirral’s Public Health Team is urging residents to find out if their heart is happy and get their blood pressure checked for free.

Cllr Chris Jones, cabinet member for adult care and health, said: “I’m proud that Wirral is taking part in KYN week again this year, the UK’s biggest free blood pressure testing event, with our fantastic public health nurses hosting several ‘Pressure Stations’ at community events this month.

“High blood pressure is a largely preventable and treatable condition but contributes to the leading causes of death, locally and nationally.

“The message to people is to get your blood pressure checked and help to keep your heart happy.”

Offering healthy heart advice and support, the borough’s public health nurses will also be giving free blood pressure checks at these events.

Dr Paula Cowan, Chair of Wirral CCG and local GP, said: “Many key risk factors for developing high blood pressure are largely lifestyle-related such as unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, age and family history or background.

“If your BP reads high, you can lower it and help to keep your heart happy with lifestyle changes and, if necessary, by taking medication as directed by your doctor.”

"A BP check is quick, free, painless and could save your life.”

Wirral’s Public Health Nurses will be offering free blood pressure checks at:

  • Tuesday 10th September, Wirral Multicultural Organisation, Birkenhead, 10am – 12pm (WMO users only).
  • Wednesday 11th September, OVO Cycling Event, Birkenhead Park, all day.
  • Tuesday 17th September, Arrowe Park Hospital, Upton, 10am – 4pm.
  • Tuesday 24th September, Pyramids Shopping Centre, Birkenhead, 10am – 4pm.

In addition to the KYN events, many pharmacies across Wirral can also provide information and advice on simple steps to keep blood pressure under control and will measure your blood pressure accurately.
